Clanfield RC off road club reviews.
Review and pictures from a recent Clanfield R/C meeting
Truggies Heat 1
Mark Jarvis totally dominated heat 1 of the truggies. Four starts, four wins, always finishing well clear of the opposition. Richard Baker was the most consistent of the other racers, with three second places and a fifth. The remaining entrants yo-yo'd up and down the results table, heat by heat.
Truggies Heat 2
Simon Freeman, Mark Byrne and Damjen Tutton were models of consistency. Freeman won each round, Byre claiming every second place, and Tutton taking all the third place slots. This belied the actual closeness of the racing in this round, with only a few seconds in each heat separating a number of competitors.
Seven laps appeared to be the benchmark against which to judge results. At least half the competitors in this heat managed the 7 laps or more in each round.

Clanfield RC Club run SRS 2007 R4 on August 5th 2007.
Review and pictures by Peter Maisey.
A clear blue sky and a gentle breeze greeted entrants to Round 4 of the SRS at the Clanfield track. Any worries of the Saharan dust storms similar to those kicked up by the cars in 2006 were quickly allayed. A new track surface laid during the spring ensured little dust. These extra layers compacted soil also ensured that the underlying flints were now too deeply buried to cause problems.
The event had entries from across the region, attracting a number of first-timers to Clanfield. Clearly the experience was an enjoyable one for some, with various positive comments about the track and race organisation.
"the best race day I have ever had"
"the track is real good..."
"my 1st ever time at Clanfield and definitely not my last!"
"Top racing, top track and a very slick operation..."
Twenty seven truggies and over sixty buggies raced the day away in six heats, culminating in four buggy and three truggy finals, some 4.5 hours, nearly 4000 laps, and 1200 kilometres of almost continuous racing.
If you don't believe the distance, the arithmetic is ((3975 laps * 300 Metres ) / 1000) = 1192 kilometres.
Truggy "C" final
The 15 minute "C" final was taken by Tony Scott. Paul Morgan was a lap behind in second place, with Andy Tidley a further lap adrift in third. These three drivers were all promoted to the "B" final
Truggy "B" final
The "B" final was run over 20 minutes, allowing Joe Joyce to take a one lap win over Steven Martin, with Howard Elston on the same number of laps as Martin, "C" final winner Scott ocupied fourth place, to gain promotion again, into the "A" final.
Truggy "A" final
The "A" final was run over 30 minutes. Simon Freeman led from start to finish, extending his lead to 2 laps by the end of the race. Freeman's club mate and rival Mark Byrne claimed the runners up spot, with Joe Joyce third.
The fastest driver in the final was Mark Jarvis, claiming 4 of the top 10 fastest laps during the race. Unfortunately electrical or mechanical failure brought his charge to an abrupt halt half way through the final.
Buggy final D
The 20 minute "D" resulted in a very close finish between winner Nial Brennan and runner up Dean Dukes, separated by a mere 4 seconds.
Buggy final C
As with the "D" final, two drivers, Simon Yeung and Chris Smoothly, completed the same number of laps, one more than three other drivers. However, Yeung's winning time was a fairly big 22 seconds
Buggy final B
Another 20 minute event, the "B" final had 4 drivers pushing for the win. Winner Reece Sawyer was always close to the front of the race, taking the lead 8 laps from the finish and not relinquishing it. Runner up Nick Gilbert had led from the early stages of the race, but was unable to stem the late charge of Sawyer. Reece Ashby finished 3rd, two seconds behind Gilbert and 4 seconds ahead of 4th placed Tommy Chung.
Buggy final A
Chung was possibly pacing himself in the "B" final. Having been promoted to the "A" final on the basis of his "B" final 4th place, he beat every body home to take the final race of the day. He didn't have an easy ride though, with Mark Johnson crossing the line a mere 2 seconds behind. Marc Knight took 3rd place, a lap behind, with Rachel Merry 4th, a further lap adrift.

Buggies Heat 1
Simon Turner was the front runner in this series of rounds with 3 wins from 4 starts. Achieving 8 laps in each of his wins, his one failure appeared to be more related to other drivers improving, rather than Turner having a bad drive. Of the other competitors, James Baxter, Reece Sawyer and Neil Gavin were the most consistent, swapping podium places round by round.
Buggies Heat 2
This heat was headed Steve Biscoe with 2 wins and 2 second places. Behind him, Nick Gilbert and Reece Ashby gave chase.
By the time this heat was underway, it was becoming increasingly obvious that the 7 lap benchmark was unlikely to be enough to win a round, and even achieving 8 laps was no guarantee of a win.
Buggies Heat 3
Mark Johnston, and Greg Catley battled for the chequered flag in this heat, with Johnston taking 2 of the 4 rounds, and Catley the remaining two. Tim Warren and Simon Freeman were the most consistent of the other drivers, swapping the minor places as the rounds progressed.
Buggies Heat 4
Again, this heat proved that 8 laps didn't always guarantee a win. Round 1 started with a win for Rachel Merry, with 3 other drives completing 8 laps. Merry was relegated to runner up in the next round, behind Jess Saunders, with 5 divers completing 8 laps. By the time round 4 was complete, with Rob Racey taking his 2nd win of the day, 6 drivers had passed the 8 lap barrier.
