Many thanks to Peter Maisey for this review and pictures of R 6 of the Clanfield Summer series which was included in the SRS Championships.
On Sunday 24th September Clanfield RC club hosted round 5 of the 2006 SRS Championships, their first big race meeting since their founding just over 12 months ago.
A long dry summer had seen much of the track surface eroded away down to underlying flint. In the fortnight leading up to the meeting, club members resurfaced much of track. Overnight rain ensured a dust free day's racing.
Quite a few of the 50+ drivers contesting the event had forgotten how slippery a dry and dusty track can be. The new damp surface seemed to take some getting used to, with grip roll in abundance during the early rounds.
On the Saturday evening prior to the main event, free practice was interspersed with Monster Truck racing, a class not catered for in the SRS meetings.
Sufficient drivers entered the Sunday races for two Truggy heats and four Buggy heats.
Truggy Races
The first of the Truggy heats was dominated by Tommy Chung, winning 3 of the 4 rounds. Only mechanical problems in heat 2 denied him the chance of a clean sweep.
Heat two of the Truggies was a ding dong battle between Elliot Boots and Matthew Perry, with two wins a piece.
Race timings pointed to any one of three drivers, Tommy Chung, Elliot Boots and Matthew Perry as probable winner of the Truggy A final. In a very close run 20 minute race, Boots pipped Chung by a mere 3 seconds, with Perry a lap behind in 3rd place.

Buggy Races
Heat 1 of the buggies was led from start to finish by Dave Spashett, although by the final round, drivers Craig Summers and Dave Isherwood were beginning to close the gap on Spashett.
Heat 2 of the buggies was a two driver affair, with Mark Dell and Richard Palmer swapping first place. A very busy Clanfield track owner Tony Bolwell managed time to get out onto the track. Some consistent performances ensured he finished each round with the same number of laps completed as the leaders.
In heat 3 of the buggies Rob Rasey, Grant Fibbens and Barry Champion held sway, with Rasey just managing to hold off the opposition to take three wins out of a possible four.
Heat 4 of the buggies was totally dominated by Elliot Boots, winning all four rounds, managing one more lap than all other heat entrants in three out of the four races.
The Buggy C final was yet another close run thing, won by George prior, a mere 0.25 seconds ahead of Hai Chu.
The Buggy B final was almost as close as the C final. Craig Summers finished ahead of second placed Barry Champion by 4 seconds, with Tony Bolwell a further two seconds behind. These three drivers plus fourth placed Mark McDonnell were bumped up to the A final.
Not satisfied with his winning performance in the Truggy heats, Elliot Boots added the Buggy A final to his list of successes. Over a thirty minute race, Boots pulled out a 3 lap lead, running nearly 3kph faster than second placed Adrian Svensson. Boots led for all except the first 3 laps. Richard Palmer followed closely behind Svennson, with a further 5 drivers only one lap behind these two.
Mechanical failure robbed Tony Bolwell of a potential high finishing place, having hauled himself up from fourteenth place after a poor start, to third place half way though the race. Having been bumped up from the preceding B final, two successive finals were obviously too much for his car.
So, a successful day's racing. Clanfield club members put a great deal of work into
preparing the track to ensure a good days racing. Sarah Bolwell manning the computer
ensured the day's racing ran quickly and efficiently. Congratulations to Clanfield
RC Club for making their first regional meeting a great success.
